About Us
Read MoreMomentum Whippets are located in Sidney, BC on beautiful Vancouver Island. The best thing about living here, aside from the stunning scenery, is that the climate is conducive to running our whippets all year round. What could be better? Our dogs are first and foremost our beloved companions who are members of our family and have their rightful place in our hearts and on our furniture. While our greatest passion is lure coursing, we appreciate the versatility of this breed and take part in other activities such as CWA racing, oval track racing, conformation shows, agility, and obedience. Two of our dogs are also certified as pet therapy dogs.
We first became involved with whippets in 2001 after we decided to include a dog in our family. After considerable research we decided that whippets were the breed we were most interested in. We met June Harrison at a dog show and when we saw her dogs it was love at first sight. Their sleek, curvy athleticism was impressive and we hadn't even seen them run yet! After accepting June's invitation to a lure coursing event we never looked back! We stood in the pouring rain in three degree weather watching the dogs run and I was hooked. We spent the next two years helping out at practices and trials and learning more about the breed. June had plans to breed Ch Loughren Tiger Lily, FChX, an outstanding bitch that captured my heart and has held it ever since. Her lure coursing record is incredible and as far as I know her achievement of 660 points in one year has never been beaten. The long wait was worth it and the day that June placed one of Lily's pups in my arms is one I will never forget.
"Lyra" (Loughren Cinnamon, FChX2) has definitely followed in her mother's pawprints on the field (including her naughty habit of dragging me out to the start line at a trial). Her keen prey drive is countered by an otherwise sweet and gentle disposition. She is my constant companion and my true heart and soul dog. We share a very unique bond and she will always be very very special to me.
Lyra joined our family in 2003, and in 2005 we finally accepted the addictive nature of these wonderful creatures. River (Loughren Sweet Memory of June, FChX) came to us from Noni Eastman and cheerfully disrupted the balance in our household. Nevertheless, she was a perfect fit, and she and Lyra are the best of friends. Our family had another addition in 2006 with the birth of our daughter, Faye. Faye has attended lure coursing trials since she was in utero and took an active interest in "watching the doggies race". She also likes to feed the dogs, play with them, and come along on walks with them. Is it any surprise that her first playhouse was a dog crate?
My first venture into breeding began in 2007. After a year of research, my quest for a stud dog ended at the National in Euguene, OR in the spring of 2008. There I met Am. Ch. Morlais Sergeant Pepper and I knew I had found the right dog! I was impressed by both his movement and his conformation, and later, it was his beautiful temperment that sealed the deal. Lyra was bred to Pepper in December 2008 and she gave birth to her first litter in February 2009.
I managed to limit myself to keeping only one pup and "Lumin" (Ch Momentum's Rain over Redwoods FChX) has become a permanent member of our pack. She is everything I had hoped to produce and will continue the Momentum line.
My involvement with whippets has deepened over the last few years and I am always eager to learn more about this wonderful breed. I am a current member of the CKC and the National Whippet Club of Canada, the President of the Vancouver Island Lure Coursing Association, and former Editor for CANFAN (official newsletter for the Canadian Sighthound Field Association). I am interested in educating people about whippets (and sighthounds in general) and will continue to promote this incredible breed.
The majority of the photos on my website are courtesy of my husband David, who began his photography career on the lure coursing field. His skill at capturing sighthounds in motion has expanded into a passion for wildlife and landscape photography. His images may be found at http://www.davehutchison.ca
